XLOOKUP in Excel: A Practical Guide

XLOOKUP replaces VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP with a simpler, more flexible lookup function.

By the Numoren Editorial Team4 min read

Syntax

=XLOOKUP(lookup_value, lookup_array, return_array, [if_not_found], [match_mode], [search_mode]).

Why it's better

XLOOKUP can look left, defaults to exact match, handles missing values gracefully and doesn't break when you insert columns.

Finance example

Pull a company's revenue from a data table: =XLOOKUP("ACME", A2:A500, D2:D500, "Not found").
